Antivirus mogul and cryptocurrency aficionado John McAfee has reportedly been released by law enforcement teams in the Dominican Republic after being nabbed on his private boat several days ago.
Reports on the details of his arrest are vague, but AP sources note that “multiple high caliber weapons as well as ammunition were seized during the arrest.”
The way these reports are worded suggests that the arrest was because of the guns and ammunition.
However, McAfee’s history reads a little bit like a case of “where in the world is Carmen San Diego?”
John McAfee Accused of Murder in Belize
McAfee has been accused of being involved in a murder in Belize, and is in exile from the United States for tax evasion charges.
He’s also running an erstwhile presidential campaign that he admits is based on promoting cryptocurrency.
Today McAfee posted pictures of himself with members of his entourage showing that he is free and in good shape.
However, as McAfee suggests that he’s going to move to an undisclosed location to avoid pursuit by the CIA, his campaign manager has said some things that sound a little fishy.
“I have good reason to suspect that John McAfee, @theemrsmcafee and other companions have been detained by authorities at their latest port of call,” tweeted campaign manager Rob Benedicto Pacifico Juan Maria Loggia-Ramirez Tuesday. “If John misses his next check-in, events will be set into motion that I cannot prevent once they have begun. John has secreted data with individuals across the world. I know neither their identities or locations. They will release their payloads if John goes missing.”
What kind of “information” is Loggia-Ramirez talking about? The statement sounds a bit like it’s referring to blackmail.
McAfee has been an outspoken voice for Bitcoin, suggesting that the cryptocurrency is going to rise to amazing new heights in the years to come.
If you believe McAfee, who, to his credit, made a fortune in IT, Bitcoin is going to be up a thousand percent within two years. He’s not the only one who’s prophesying these sorts of gains – but he may be the only one who’s running for president from Latin America.
