In America, we’re getting used to hearing news out of the Middle Kingdom.
There’s a general sense that China, the most populous country in the world, is reclaiming its earlier mantle as the biggest global superpower and national economy as an emerging leader in today’s globalized world.
But what’s behind these changes?
A new series from CNET called “Generation China” focuses on all of these phenomena that are propelling the Chinese government and the Chinese people into the global limelight.
Citing China’s dominance in cyber-espionage and other aspects of spycraft, the series also looks at China’s dominance in various markets.
For example, there’s the technology market – the latest news this past week was that the U.K. government tried to lock out Chinese telecom/tech provider Huawei out of its 5G implementation plans, but as we’ve seen, this is easier said than done.
At the same time, a reported Chinese 10-year plan called “Made in China” strikes fear into manufacturers elsewhere in the world. But isn’t everything already made in China?
If you talk to many experts and economists, it’s mainly this manufacturing capacity, along with projects like One Belt, One Road that are forming China into an unequaled and unparalleled power in the world.
That will inform CNet’s new take, but writer Roger Cheng says the series will focus more on tech, and less on politics.
“While we won’t dive too deeply into the ever-shifting political back and forth between the U.S. and China, the stories will look at how the work to develop these technologies informs the dynamic between these two nations,” Cheng writes, citing remarks by experts noting Sino-American competition in AI and 5G.
Look for more as the new series breaks down what’s happening in the Chinese mainland, and how that’s going to affect everyone on every other continent.
